Sybil S Usan

Birth:  Aug. 28, 1907, USA

Death:  Feb. 21, 2003

Brooklyn Center

Hennepin County

Minnesota, USA

Sybil Usan was the nation's oldest living Girl Scout. Sybil was a longtime feminist who spent more than 80 years in the Girl Scouts. She joined the Girl Scouts at age 10 in 1917 while living in Binghamton, N.Y.

She cared very deeply about young women being assertive members in society. In 1922, Sybil met Juliette Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts and lobbied for more exploring for girls. She wanted to do what the Boy Scouts were doing, hiking and camping. She played a big part in getting that done and the Girl Scouts became more active, especially after World War II.

Sybil often attened scouting meetings with her great-granddaughter, sharing her early memories. She was active and enthusiastic right up to her death. She had a life membership in the Girl Scouts.

One of her scouting uniforms is on display at the St. Louis County Historical Society in Duluth, Mn. In 2002 she was honored by the Girl Scout Council of Greater Minneapolis for her lifelong contributions to scouting.

In 1927, she married Isadore Usan, and moved to Duluth, Mn where they co-owned a auto body shop. She worked as the head bookkeeper for the business for more than 50 years. After her husband's death in 1963, Sybil continued to work at the body shop until she was 80. Sybil died of natural causes.

GIRL SCOUT DIES AT 95

Duluth News Tribune (MN) (Published as Duluth News-Tribune (MN)) - February 23, 2003Browse Issues

Author: News Tribune

One of the nation's OLDEST LIVING GIRL SCOUTS -- a former Duluth resident -- died in her home Friday at age 95.

Sybil Sass Usan joined the then-fledgling organization in about 1917, at the age of 10. As a child she met the founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low.

Usan and her husband Isadore Usan co-owned Peerless Auto Body in Duluth with other relatives, and lived in the area for many years.

Last summer, she was honored by the Girl Scout Council of Greater Minneapolis during the Bravo Event, her granddaughter Amy Krupp said. Krupp serves as the Minnesota representative and chairwoman of the National Jewish Girl Scout Committee.

``She was an amazing woman,'' Krupp said. At age 92, she tried snorkeling for the first time, her family said.

Usan inspired four generations of Girl Scouts.

Her late daughter, Helene Luba Krupp, was very involved in the Northern Pine Council of Girl Scouts in Duluth. And her great-granddaughter, Ilana Niemi, is a cadette with the Girl Scout Council of Greater Minneapolis.

Usan was honored for her years of service by the Minneapolis council. She shared the honor with her great-granddaughter, who was honored for work to create packages with personal care items for local shelters. Usan's story and scouting history was shared with scouts through the Minneapolis Council's quarterly newsletter, the Bridge.

A graveside service for Usan will be held Monday at the Adas Israel Cemetery in Duluth following a 10:30 a.m. service in Minneapolis. Following the graveside service, friends and family will gather at Temple Israel in Duluth.
